Lifting Chain Details

A lifting chain is a crucial rigging tool used in lifting and hoisting operations. It consists of multiple links connected in sequence. Due to its high strength and stability, it is widely used in applications requiring heavy lifting, such as factories, mines, docks, and construction.

Structure and Components

Links: The basic unit of a lifting chain, commonly round or oval in shape. Links are connected by welding or forging to form a continuous chain structure.
End Fittings: Depending on the application, each end of a lifting chain is typically equipped with various connectors, such as hooks (including clevis hooks and eye hooks), connecting rings, and shackles, for connection to lifting equipment (such as cranes and overhead cranes) or the object being hoisted.

Material and Performance

Material: High-strength alloy steels (such as 20Mn2 and 35CrMo) are primarily used. Stainless steels (such as 304 and 316) may be used in some specialized applications to meet corrosion resistance requirements. These materials undergo forging and heat treatment (quenching and tempering) to significantly enhance the strength, toughness, and wear resistance of the lifting chain. Performance Indicators: Core performance indicators include rated load (safe working load), breaking strength (maximum tensile force capable of withstanding fracture, typically 4-8 times the rated load), and fatigue strength. Chains of varying specifications must comply with relevant international or industry standards (such as ISO 3077 and GB/T 20946).

Classification and Application

By Structure:

Single-limb chains: Consist of a single chain, suitable for simple vertical lifting.

Multi-limb chains (such as two-, three-, and four-limb chains): Consist of multiple chains joined by a top connecting ring. The lifting angle can be adjusted based on the shape and center of gravity of the object being hoisted, making them suitable for lifting large or irregular objects.

By Application:

Lifting chains: Used for general lifting and handling of heavy objects, and are the most commonly used type in industry.

Explosion-proof chains: Made of non-sparking materials such as copper alloy, suitable for use in flammable and explosive environments (such as chemical plants and oil and gas storage tank areas). Use and Maintenance
Before use, inspect the chain for defects such as deformation, cracks, wear, and rust. Ensure that the end fittings are intact and that the lifting load does not exceed the rated load.
Avoid prolonged use in corrosive environments such as those involving acids and alkalis (unless the chain is specially designed for corrosion resistance). After use, clean, dry, and store in a well-ventilated area. Regularly perform flaw detection (such as magnetic particle testing or ultrasonic testing) and load testing to ensure safety.
